Gili Island Lombok | The New Luxury Destination in Indonesia

22 April 2026

I still remember the first time I arrived on Lombok Island. The air was different quieter, slower, thick with frangipani and salt. Bali had its magic, of course, but what I found here, on this stretch of Indonesia that most travellers still overlook, was something I hadn’t expected: a place that felt genuinely itself.

That feeling never left me. And over the years, as I built The Lombok Lodge and watched this region slowly step into the spotlight it always deserved, I’ve only fallen more deeply in love with it. Gili Island Lombok isn’t just a destination I run a business in it’s the place I chose to call home. And I want to share it with you the way I’d share it with a friend.

Key Takeaways:

  • The three Gili Islands Gili Trawangan, Gili Air, and Gili Meno each have their own soul. Pick the right one for your mood- Gili Trawangan brings the energy; Gili Meno gives you stillness; Gili Air is the sweet spot between the two.
  • No motorised vehicles on any island just horse carriages, bicycles, and the sound of the ocean.
  • Snorkelling, scuba diving, and swimming with turtles are among the best experiences in all of Indonesia.
  • Most travellers fly into Lombok Airport, then take a fast boat from Bangsal Harbour on the northwest coast.
  • Luxury here is evolving less about excess, more about intention, wellness, and authenticity.

Why Gili Island Lombok Is Trending

People often ask me why I chose Lombok over Bali. My honest answer? Lombok chose me.

There’s something about the nearby Gili Islands floating just off the northwest coast these small, car-free worlds with their white sand beaches and impossibly clear water that gets under your skin. Many visitors arrive planning a quick stopover from mainland Bali and end up rearranging their entire trip. I’ve watched it happen more times than I can count.

What draws people here isn’t just the beauty, though the beauty is extraordinary. It’s the feeling of arriving somewhere that hasn’t been flattened by mass tourism. The coral reef is still alive and buzzing with marine life. The beach still has room to breathe. The locals still greet you like a guest, not a transaction.

Gili Island Lombok offers something increasingly rare: a genuine place, experienced at a human pace. And for travellers who’ve grown tired of curated Instagram destinations, that authenticity is everything.

Know Your Gili: Three Islands, Three Vibes

I love all three Gili Islands equally, but I love them for entirely different reasons. Let me introduce them to you the way I would over a coffee on my terrace.

Gili Trawangan

Gili T, as everyone calls it is the biggest and boldest of the three. It’s the party island, no question about it, with beach clubs, live music spilling out after dark, and dive shops lining the main strip. But here’s what most people don’t realise: Gili Trawangan has grown up. The east side of the island still buzzes with energy and fancy resorts sit alongside longstanding hostels, but wander around to the west side and you’ll find a completely different island quiet, golden, with snorkelling right off the beach and barely another soul in sight. Gili T contains multitudes, and I find that endlessly fascinating.

Gili Air

is my personal recommendation for most of my guests. It’s a solid choice the kind of island that rewards you the longer you stay. The eastern side has excellent restaurants, beachside cafes, yoga studios, and easy access to scuba diving and water sports. But it never tips into overwhelm. You can walk around the island in under an hour, stopping wherever the mood takes you. That’s the Gili Air rhythm, and once you find it, it’s hard to leave.

Gili Meno

is the tiny island for people who mean it when they say they want to disconnect. It’s the quietest of the three islands fewer dining options, fewer visitors, and an extraordinary turtle sanctuary where turtles glide through the shallows just metres from shore. I’ve taken guests there who’ve sat on that beach and cried, it’s so beautiful. No motorized traffic, no noise just horse carriages clip-clopping along sandy paths and the ocean doing what the ocean does.

What unites all three? Not one has a motorised vehicle. That silence the absence of engines is the first thing you notice, and the last thing you forget.

Getting There: Fast Boats, Local Boats & More

Getting to the Gilis is part of the adventure, and I always tell my guests to enjoy the journey rather than rush it.

Most people fly into Lombok Airport, then make their way to Bangsal Harbour on the northwest coast of Lombok the main jumping-off point for the islands. From Bangsal, a public slow boat runs throughout the day for those travelling light on budget. A fast boat is the more comfortable option and gets you to Gili Trawangan in around 30 minutes; Gili Air and Gili Meno are even closer. Always check your departure time ahead of peak season boats fill up, and there’s nothing worse than missing the last crossing and spending the night in Bangsal when you could be on the island.

If you’re coming from Bali, there are direct fast boat services from Padang Bai and Serangan port on the Balinese coast roughly 90 minutes across open water, with Nusa Penida visible on the horizon as you go. Many of my guests combine bali and lombok in one trip, crossing between the two by fast boat and treating both islands as chapters in the same story. It’s a beautiful way to travel.

For those staying at The Lombok Lodge, I always arrange a private car from Lombok Airport to Bangsal, followed by a reserved fast boat. It makes the whole arrival feel seamless which is exactly how your holiday should begin.

A New Era of Conscious Luxury

When I first started building what would become The Lombok Lodge, I sat with a question that I think about constantly: what does luxury actually mean in a place like this?

It doesn’t mean marble lobbies or imported everything. On the coast of Lombok, luxury is waking up to Mount Rinjani glowing pink at dawn the highest volcano on the island, and one of the most humbling sights I’ve ever seen. It’s the smell of the garden before breakfast. It’s a glass of something beautiful, made from ingredients grown twenty metres away.

The region is shifting in a way that excites me deeply. A new generation of travellers and a new generation of hospitality is emerging around the Gili Islands and neighbouring Lombok. Organic garden-to-table dining, eco-conscious architecture, and genuinely personalised guest experiences are replacing the old model of scale and excess. Wellness isn’t a menu item here; it’s the atmosphere.

Senggigi, on the west coast of Lombok, embodies this beautifully. It’s a laid-back town that stays genuinely itself tropical and unhurried where days move slowly, the water is calm, and the hills roll into the sea in that effortless way (Visit Lombok, 2025). Locals there have preserved something real, and I have enormous respect for that. The town sits along a ten-kilometre stretch of coastal road on the west coast of Lombok, and in the late afternoon you can watch the sun sink next to Bali’s silhouette across the strait one of the finest sunsets you’ll ever see (GPS My City).

Botanical Lifestyle: A Signature Experience on Lombok

One of the things I’m most proud of at The Lombok Lodge is what we’ve built around botanical mixology. It came from a simple belief: that the most sophisticated thing you can offer a guest is something deeply considered, made with care, from this specific piece of earth.

At Ibu Antje’s Botanical Bar, everything starts in the garden. Our botanical creations are alcohol-free layered with flavour, beautiful to look at, and genuinely nourishing. Guests who arrive expecting “mocktails” leave understanding something different: that restraint, when done with intention, is its own kind of indulgence.

It’s become a signature experience of Gili Island Lombok for our guests. And it reflects, I think, exactly where this destination is headed.

Bagno Di Gili, our concept on the island, carries the same spirit effortless, stylish, rooted in the place rather than imposed upon it. That’s the only kind of luxury I’m interested in building.

Where to Stay in Gili Island Lombok

I’m obviously not a neutral voice here, so I’ll say this plainly and let you decide: The Lombok Lodge Boutique Hotel and The Lombok Lodge Pool Villas were designed for people who want to experience the best of this region without sacrificing comfort or soul.

Every detail the architecture, the garden, the dining, the service was built around the question of what it means to truly belong somewhere. Our guests don’t feel like they’re visiting Lombok; they feel like they’re living here, at least for a while. That’s the intention.

For those who want a mainland base before heading to the Gilis, Senggigi offers excellent resorts and boutique villas at prices that feel generous compared to Bali with easy boat access to the islands and some of the best sunsets in the whole of Indonesia on your doorstep. It’s a bit pricey to stay directly on Gili Trawangan during peak season, so many savvy travellers use Senggigi or The Lombok Lodge as their anchor and visit the islands on day trips or short stays.

The Future of Luxury Travel

I’ve watched Gili Island Lombok transform over the years I’ve lived here. What was once truly Indonesia’s best-kept secret is now slowly, thoughtfully becoming one of Southeast Asia’s most coveted destinations. And I’m glad it’s happening on its own terms.

The travellers who visit now aren’t chasing a trend. They’re chasing something more lasting: tranquility over crowds, authenticity over performance, elegance over noise. They love Gili the way I love Gili not loudly, but deeply.

There’s a version of the future where this region grows and loses itself. I think about that often. But I also believe and I see evidence of it every day that the people building here, the locals shaping the culture, and the visitors choosing this place over easier options, are all pulling in the same direction. Toward something that lasts.

Come and see it for yourself. I’ll be here.

FAQ

Which Gili Island is best for couples?

Gili Meno, without question. It’s quiet, intimate, and extraordinary a tiny island where turtles swim past at sunset and the night time sky is full of stars. Gili Air is a wonderful alternative if you’d like a little more to do between beach days.

Can you visit the Gili Islands on a day trip from Bali?

You can a fast boat from Padang Bai or Serangan port takes around 90 minutes. But I’d gently push back on the idea. One gili island visit deserves at least one night. The magic really begins once the day-trippers have headed back.

Is scuba diving in the Gilis worth it?

It’s some of the best diving in Indonesia, and I don’t say that lightly. The coral reef systems around all three islands are exceptional, and diving alongside turtles and reef sharks is a regular experience, not a rare one. Every level is catered for, from beginner courses to advanced dives.
